Museums ![]() Abraham Lincoln Museum U.S. Hwy. 25E at Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, TN; one of the largest Lincoln and Civil war collections in the U.S. Arthur Museum 2210 Cumberland Ave, Middlesboro, National Historic Register; built 1886; museum to showcase city founder Alexander A. Arthur's memorabilia; housed in the old American Association Building. "Coal House" & Museum Built in 1926 with 42 tons of bituminous coal. Houses the Bell County Chamber of Commerce. Exhibit outside offers a glimpse of life in the mines. "The Lost Squadron" Museum Middlesboro Airport, home of the "Glacier Girl", a restored World War II P-38 "Lightning" fighter plane recovered from Greenland Ice Cap in 1992 underneath 268 feet of ice. Back to Menu ![]() Cumberland Gap National Historical Park 606-248-2817; U.S. Hwy 25E (Cumberland Gap Parkway), S. of Middlesboro,; covers 20,305 acres in KY, VA and TN; second largest historical park in the nation. The "Gap" is an 800 ft. deep natural break in the Cumberland Mountains. Indians passed through on a trail called Warriors Path; later pioneers led by Daniel Boone marked out the trail that became the Wilderness Road. More than 300,000 pioneers traveled the "Gateway to the West" between 1775 and 1810. Park Features/Tours/Programs Breathtaking view overlooking three states from the 2,440 ft. perch at Pinnacle Overlook, handicapped accessible, no trailers or vehicles over 20 ft.; Fort McCook, held by both the North and South during the Civil War; future tours to be offered of Cudjo's Cave, featuring outstanding geological formations; Hensley's Settlement Tour, remote 1904 mountain farmstead community atop Brush Mountain, restored houses, barns, fences, schoolhouse and cemetary; Interpretive Programs and Ranger-Guided Activities, May-Aug., include campfire programs, hikes, walks, music and craft demonstrations; Hiking, more than 50 miles of trails include parts of the original Wilderness Road (restoration ongoing) and the TriState Marker, some park features like Sand Cave and White Rocks accessible only by trail. Newlee Iron Furnace and trail begins in the town of Cumberland Gap; Wilderness Road Amphitheater, campfire programs and music during summer months. Pine Mountain State Resort Park 606-337-3066 or 800-255-PARK; U.S. Hwy 25E, one mile south of Pineville; 1,519 acres; Kentucky's first state park, established 1926. Pine Mountain range is a western section of the giant Appalachian Mountain system. Rewarding area for bird watchers, outstanding variety of wildflowers. Open year-round. PARK FEATURES: Pool, planned recreation, hiking, mini-golf, handicapped facilities, nature center, picnic shelters, playground. Hiking, 8.5 miles of self-guided trails; Laurel Cove Amphitheater, breathtaking outdoor setting, site of the annual Mountain Laurel Festival held in Pineville the last weekend of May since 1931; Chain Rock, begun as a tongue-in-cheek publicity stunt in the 1920's and still draws tourists; Interpretive Programs & Staff Guided Activities year-round. Pine Mountain State Resort Park Nature Preserve, in Pine Mountain State Resort Park; a beautiful old-growth forest with some trees over 200 years old. Several species of rare wildflowers can be found among the ferns and mountain laurel. Open to the public for hiking, bird watching and nature study. Back to Menu Cannon Creek Lake West of U.S. Hwy 25E, 6 miles south of Pineville, 243 acres completed in 1972. Fishing (rainbow trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, crappie, bluegill, warmouth, channel catfish); ramp, electic motors only; Pineville Water Supply. Chenoa Lake Kentucky 190, 15 miles west of Pineville in Kentucky Ridge State Forest, 37 acres; built in 1953. Fishing (largemouth bass, white crappie, bluegill, green sunfish, redear sunfish, channel catfish, brown bullhead); Kentucky Division of Forestry.
